I met Liz Herrera while we were both involved in an intensive year-long trading course with approximately 10 other traders. All of us had some trading experience and the course was designed to take us to the next level in our trading. It involved not only the technical aspects of trading a system, but also focused a great deal of attention on the mental and emotional aspects of trading.

It soon became apparent to everyone that Liz was at a higher level than the most of the rest of us. Not only did she quickly master the technical side of trading (Liz also worked harder than anyone else), but she was much  more advanced in the mental discipline required to be a successful trader. Her experience as a high level poker player and subsequent training with Jared Tendler had made her able to trade with steely discipline while the rest of us struggled with various emotional issues that limited our potential.

It wasn’t long into the course before Liz and I, and often one or two other traders, started getting together at the end of each trading day to discuss the market and the trades we had taken. Liz loved to talk trading. It was plain she had a true aptitude for trading and would talk about trading to whoever would listen and participate. We all talked about trades we had taken that day, the reasons why or why not, and our view of the market environment. But the majority of the time was spent listening to Liz talk about her trades; what she saw, why she took this trade, why she didn’t take that one, her mental focus, etc. After a few weeks, and at our insistence, we were all informally enrolled in Liz’s school of trading.

Liz is a natural born teacher. She possesses both technical knowledge, unbridled enthusiasm and loves to help others succeed. For approximately 9-10 months we talked about trading for an hour + almost every single trading day. After previously spending way too much money on various trading classes (like most of us), 90% of what I know about trading today I learned from Liz Herrera during those sessions.

Most importantly, Liz drummed into my head the importance of the mental/emotional aspect of trading. I could see daily how her mastery of this made her a better trader. My initial problems generally dealt with lack of discipline and especially impatience. Liz taught me various techniques to deal with my problems. Among them were how to recognize what my problems areas were and what trading mistakes I was repeatedly making. Like most people, I had no idea what I was doing wrong. Sounds pretty basic, but you first have to be able to recognize clearly what your problems are before you can correct them. I also learned the power of journaling in trading and such specific techniques such as how to employ Jared Tendler’s Mental Hand History. Although I have designed and presently use my own trading strategy to fit my specific personality, I still regularly use Liz’s techniques as part of my daily trading preparation and routine to maintain my mental trading edge. I, like Liz, strongly believe that the mental aspect of trading is the key to becoming a successful trader.
